Systems Integration Services for Surface-Source Water Treatment Facility

Customer: Medford Water Commission
Project Location:Medford, Oregon

Harris Group provided systems integration services in support of the Water Treatment Facility at this Northwest site (Medford Water Commission site located in Medford, Oregon). The Water Treatment Facility is comprised of the following equipment:

  • Twelve anthracite gravity filters.
  • River intake pumps, screens, and motors.
  • Ozone pre-treatment system for odor control from surface water source.
  • Pre-treatment chemical systems.
  • Associated balance of plant pumps, motors, equipment and instrumentation.
  • Wireless Remote Telemetry system for support of distribution activities.

Harris Group has performed several systems integration services for this customer, including migration of the SCADA Human-Machine Interface hardware and software to the latest, supported version. During this project, the SCADA was upgraded from Windows NT based Intellution Fix 32 to Windows XP based GE Fanuc iFix software. Additionally, historical data collection was converted from an MS SQL based system to a new GE Fanuc Proficy Historian system with a dedicated server machine. To complete the migration, Harris Group worked with facility staff and tested and commissioned all HMI controls for the plant. In support of the new HMI software, new I/O drivers were commissioned, including Modbus communications to GE power meters and OPC connectivity to instrumentation connected on a serial network.

To further improve the communication network, a ControlLogix gateway was installed to divide the older DH+ proprietary network into a more manageable architecture, also removing the redundant SCADA servers from that network and allowing them to communicate over a faster Ethernet protocol.

The RTU system is MOSCAD, with iFix HMI for visualization. Screens were developed at the Water Treatment Plant SCADA to monitor the MOSCAD RTU system by polling tags over a fiber optic Wide Area Network.
